Buying a car: the insurance checklist before you drive off

You found the car. Here is how to get it insured without holding up the deal, or driving off unprotected.

Before you go to the lot

If you can, call us before you shop. We can price the vehicles you are considering, because two similar cars can carry very different insurance costs. It is better to learn that a sporty trim adds a lot to your premium before you sign than after.

Have these handy:

At the dealership

The dealer or lender will want proof of insurance before you leave. That usually means:

You do not have to leave to get this done. Call us from the dealership. We can add the car, list the lender, and email proof of insurance to you or directly to the finance office while you sit there.

The "grace period" myth

Many people have heard that a new car is automatically covered for a set number of days. Some policies do extend coverage to a newly acquired vehicle for a limited time, but the rules vary: it may only apply if you already insure another car, it may only carry the coverages you have on your other vehicles, and the time to report it differs by company. If your current car has liability only, your new financed car may have no collision coverage at all on the drive home. Call before you drive off.

Gap coverage on a financed car

If your new car is totaled or stolen, your insurer pays its actual cash value. Early in a loan, especially with a small down payment, you may owe more than that. Gap coverage pays the difference. You can often buy it from the dealer or, in many cases, add it to your auto policy for less. See gap insurance explained.

Trading in your old car

Do not cancel insurance on the trade-in until the dealership has it and the title paperwork is done. Then remove it from the policy. If you are keeping it, decide whether it still needs collision and comprehensive.

Buying from a private seller

After you drive away

Check your new policy documents: the vehicle, the VIN, the lienholder and the coverages. A typo in a VIN or a missing lienholder can cause delays later. If anything looks wrong, call us and we will fix it the same day.

Common questions

Can I get car insurance while I'm at the dealership?

Yes. Call us from the dealership and we can add the car, list the lender and email proof of insurance to you or the finance office.

Is a new car automatically covered?

Some policies extend limited coverage to a newly acquired vehicle, but the conditions vary. Do not rely on it. Call before you drive off.

What does the lender need?

Usually collision and comprehensive, a maximum deductible, and the lender listed as lienholder on the policy.

Should I buy gap insurance?

On a financed car with a small down payment or long loan, it often makes sense. It is frequently less expensive through your auto policy than through the dealer.
