What the state requires on every policy, what each coverage actually pays, and what happens if you drive without it.
Every Missouri auto policy must include:
| Coverage | Missouri minimum | What it pays for |
|---|---|---|
| Bodily injury liability | $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident | Medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering of people you injure in an accident you cause |
| Property damage liability | $25,000 per accident | Damage you cause to other people's vehicles and property |
| Uninsured motorist bodily injury | $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident | Your injuries, and your passengers', when an uninsured driver causes the accident, including many hit-and-runs |
The liability limits are usually written as 25/50/25.
$25,000 per person is the most your policy pays for any one person's injuries. $50,000 per accident is the most for everyone injured in one crash. $25,000 property damage covers the other car, a fence, a building, or anything else you damage. These are maximums. If damages exceed them, the injured party can pursue you for the difference. We walk through a real example in what 25/50/25 means in a real accident.
Driving uninsured in Missouri can lead to points on your driving record, fines and suspension of your driving privilege. If your license is suspended for failing to carry insurance, the Department of Revenue requires proof of insurance on file for three years from the date you become eligible to reinstate. If an accident was involved, that proof must be an SR-22 filing; otherwise an insurance card can be accepted. Reinstatement fees are $20 for a first offense, $200 for a second and $400 for a third. Points add up too: accumulating 8 points within 18 months can lead to suspension.
Many of our Joplin customers live or drive across the line. Kansas shares the 25/50/25 liability minimum and adds required personal injury protection (PIP) and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage; it is a no-fault state. Oklahoma shares 25/50/25 and makes uninsured motorist coverage optional, rejectable in writing. Your policy is written for the state where the car is principally garaged. If you have a home, savings, a steady income or a teen driver, the minimum leaves real exposure. Ask us to quote 50/100/50 or 100/300/100 alongside it. The price gap is usually smaller than people expect.
