Delivery and rideshare driving: the insurance gap

Driving for an app on nights and weekends? Your personal policy may stop the moment you go online.

The exclusion many drivers don't know about

Personal auto policies commonly exclude or limit coverage when you use your car to deliver goods for a fee or carry passengers for pay. If you have an accident while delivering food or driving rideshare, your personal insurer may deny the claim.

What the app company provides

Transportation and delivery network companies generally provide some insurance, but it often depends on what phase you are in:

The gaps tend to be in the waiting period and in physical damage to your own car. Terms vary by company and change over time. Read your driver agreement.

Rideshare and delivery endorsements

Some personal auto insurers offer a rideshare or delivery endorsement that extends your personal coverage into the periods where the app company's coverage is thin. Availability depends on the company and the state.

When it becomes commercial

If you deliver full time, use the vehicle mostly for business, or deliver for a business rather than an app, a commercial auto policy may be the right fit. See personal vs commercial auto.

Tell us how you drive

Do not hide delivery or rideshare driving from your insurer. If a claim reveals undisclosed business use, coverage can be denied and the policy cancelled. Tell us which apps you drive for and how often, and we will find the right coverage.

Physical damage to your own car

Even when the app company's coverage applies, damage to your own vehicle may only be covered if you carry collision on your personal policy, and the app's coverage may carry a large deductible. Read your driver agreement for how physical damage is handled, and ask us how your personal policy coordinates with it.

Driving for more than one app

Many drivers work for several apps at once. Coverage can get complicated if you have two apps open and accept a request from one. Tell us every app you drive for and how you typically work, so the endorsement or policy matches what you actually do.

Delivering for a local business

Delivering for a restaurant or store as their employee or contractor is different from app-based delivery. The business may need hired and non-owned auto coverage, and you may need commercial coverage or a delivery endorsement. See hired and non-owned auto.

Common questions

Does personal car insurance cover DoorDash or Uber driving?

Often not. Many personal policies exclude delivering or carrying passengers for pay.

Does the app provide insurance?

Usually some, depending on whether you are waiting for a request or on a trip. Gaps are common.

What is a rideshare endorsement?

An add-on to a personal policy that extends coverage into periods the app's insurance does not fully cover.

When do I need commercial auto for delivery?

If you deliver full time or for a business rather than an app, commercial auto may be the right fit.
