Insuring custom parts and riding gear

If you have put real money into your bike, make sure the policy knows about it.

Factory bike, factory coverage

A motorcycle policy values the bike largely as it came from the factory. Aftermarket additions, such as exhaust systems, custom paint, chrome, saddlebags, seats, lighting, audio and performance parts, are usually covered only up to a custom parts and equipment limit. On some policies that limit is modest unless you raise it.

How to set the right limit

  1. List every upgrade and what it cost, installed.
  2. Add them up.
  3. Ask us to set the custom parts and equipment limit to match, or close to it.

Riders are often surprised how fast upgrades add up, especially on cruisers and touring bikes.

Keep records

Good records make a claim faster and more complete.

Riding gear

Helmets, jackets, gloves, boots and armor are expensive and are often damaged in a crash. Some motorcycle policies include coverage for safety gear damaged in a covered accident, sometimes with a limit. Ask what yours includes.

Other useful options

Tell us when you upgrade

Each time you add a significant part, call us. Raising the limit usually costs little compared with the value it protects.

Total loss on a customized bike

If a heavily customized bike is totaled, the payout is the bike's value plus covered custom parts up to your limit. If your limit is too low, the rest of your investment is gone. Some riders with significant customization ask about agreed value coverage, where available, which sets the bike's value in advance.

Trikes, conversions and sidecars

Trike conversions and sidecars can change how a motorcycle is valued and rated. Tell us about any conversion so it's described correctly and the added value is covered.

Theft-deterrent equipment

Alarms, immobilizers and GPS trackers may lower your premium with some companies and improve the chance of recovery after theft. Mention them when you get a quote.

A simple upgrade log

Keep a running list: date, part, cost, installer, and a photo. Store it in the cloud. When it's time to adjust your limit, or file a claim, the information is ready.

Common questions

Are aftermarket parts covered on my motorcycle?

Usually up to a custom parts and equipment limit. Raise it to match your upgrades.

Is my motorcycle helmet covered?

Some policies cover riding gear damaged in a covered accident, sometimes with a limit.

How do I prove the value of custom parts?

Keep receipts and photos, updated after each upgrade.

What is total loss replacement?

An option on some policies that replaces a newer bike with a new one instead of paying depreciated value.
