Three separate questions

  1. Liability while towing. Usually follows the tow vehicle's commercial auto policy, but confirm the trailer is listed or covered under the policy terms.
  2. Damage to the trailer. Requires the trailer to be listed for physical damage.
  3. What's on or in the trailer. Mowers, skid steers, tools and materials need equipment, inland marine or cargo coverage.

Trailers we see most

Landscaping utility trailers, enclosed tool and equipment trailers, equipment trailers for skid steers and mini excavators, and small dump trailers.

Theft

Trailers are easy to steal. Hitch locks, wheel locks, and parking where trailers aren't visible from the road help. Keep VINs and photos on file.

Trailers left at job sites

If a trailer stays on a job site overnight, ask how your policy treats unattended equipment and whether security conditions apply.

More: tools, trailers and what's actually covered.
