Boat liability: passengers, skiers and tubers
On a busy summer weekend on Table Rock or Lake of the Ozarks, the boat is rarely the most expensive thing at risk.

The risk most owners underestimate
Most boat owners insure the hull and motor carefully and think less about liability. Yet a lake on a holiday weekend puts boats, swimmers, tubers, docks and wakes close together. A single injury can produce a claim larger than the value of the boat.
What boat liability usually covers
- Bodily injury to others caused by operating your boat, including your passengers, depending on the policy
- People you tow: skiers, wakeboarders and tubers
- Property damage to other boats, docks and marinas
- Legal defense if you are sued
Your homeowners policy may provide little or no liability for boats beyond small, low-horsepower craft. Check before you assume.
Common scenarios
- A passenger falls during a sharp turn and is hurt
- A tuber is thrown into a dock
- Your wake damages a moored boat or swamps a smaller one (coverage depends on the policy)
- You misjudge an approach and hit another boat at a marina
How much to carry
Many boat policies offer liability limits from $100,000 up. Given how serious water injuries can be, many owners carry $300,000 or more, and some add an umbrella policy. Confirm whether your umbrella extends to your boat.
Other useful coverages
- Medical payments for passengers, regardless of fault
- Uninsured boater coverage, if another uninsured boat injures you or your passengers
- Fuel spill liability, for cleanup obligations
- Wreck removal, if a sunken boat must be removed
Who is driving
Many policies cover other operators with your permission, but some exclude certain operators or require them to be listed. Young operators, guests and renters can create exposure. Make sure anyone driving your boat meets the state's age and boater-education rules, and tell us who regularly operates it.
Alcohol and boat operation
Operating a boat while impaired is illegal and dangerous, and it can affect coverage and lead to serious legal consequences. Designate a sober operator, just as you would a driver.
Renting your boat out
Peer-to-peer boat rental platforms and charging friends to use your boat can create commercial exposure that a personal boat policy excludes. If you ever rent or charter your boat, tell us before you do.
What to do after an incident on the water
- Help anyone injured and call for emergency help.
- Exchange information with other boat operators.
- Report the accident to the appropriate authorities when required by state law; serious accidents usually require a report.
- Photograph the scene and damage.
- Report the claim to your insurer and call us.
