Jet ski and personal watercraft insurance

Personal watercraft are fast, easy to lend and popular on every lake we serve. That combination is why they need their own coverage.

Homeowners usually is not enough

Homeowners policies typically provide little or no coverage for personal watercraft, either for physical damage or liability. A dedicated policy is the norm.

What a PWC policy usually covers

Liability is the big one

Jet skis are often lent to friends and teenagers. Riders can be inexperienced, and collisions with swimmers, docks and other craft can cause serious injuries. Higher liability limits, and an umbrella that extends to watercraft, are worth pricing.

Young and guest operators

Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma each have rules about operator age and boater education. Before anyone else operates your watercraft, make sure they meet the state's requirements and that your policy covers permissive operators. Some policies exclude certain operators.

Two skis, one trailer

If you own a pair of watercraft and a double trailer, list both skis and the trailer. Coverage on one does not automatically extend to the other.

Renting a jet ski

If you rent a jet ski at the lake, check the rental agreement. You may be responsible for damage to the rental, and your own policy may not cover a rented watercraft. Ask us before your trip.

Physical damage: what to know about valuation

Like boats, personal watercraft can be insured at agreed value or actual cash value. Newer and financed watercraft often benefit from agreed value, because PWCs depreciate quickly in their first years. Older skis may be fine on actual cash value. See agreed value vs actual cash value.

Theft is a real risk

Personal watercraft are small, valuable and easy to trailer away. Theft from driveways, storage lots and lake parking areas is a common claim. Lock the trailer to something solid, use a hitch lock, and store keys separately. Make sure comprehensive-type coverage stays active year-round, even in storage.
