Many boat policies exclude or limit damage from freezing if the boat was not properly winterized. Missouri winters bring enough hard freezes to crack engine blocks, outdrives and water systems if water is left inside. If you skip winterization, a claim may be denied.
If a marina or mechanic does the work, keep the receipt. It is your proof.
Some boat policies include a lay-up period: months when the boat is stored and not used, in exchange for a lower premium. If you use the boat during the lay-up period, coverage may be restricted. If you take it out on a warm day in February, check your policy first.
Comprehensive-type physical damage coverage for storage risks continues as long as the policy stays in force. Cancelling for the winter drops that protection.
If your boat stays in a slip over winter, ask whether your policy and marina require de-icing equipment or other precautions. Sinking at the dock is a real winter risk.
If a marina or service shop winterizes your boat and freeze damage happens anyway, the claim may involve their liability as well as your policy. Keep the work order, note what was done, and report any damage to both your insurer and the shop promptly. We can help you sort out who should pay first.
Trailers sitting all winter develop flat tires, seized bearings and corroded lights. That's maintenance, not insurance. But a trailer that fails on the way to the lake in April can cause an accident. Check tires, bearings and lights before the first trip. If the trailer is damaged in a covered accident, trailer coverage on your boat policy responds, if you have it.
If you truly don't use the boat from late fall to early spring, a lay-up period can reduce the premium. If you fish on warm winter days, a lay-up restriction may not fit. Tell us how you actually use the boat and we'll choose accordingly.
Often not if the boat was not properly winterized. Keep winterization receipts.
Months when the boat is stored and not used, sometimes with reduced premium and restricted coverage.
Usually not. Storage risks like theft, fire and snow load continue.
Only if the policy includes it. Many policies offer trailer coverage.
