Getting car insurance after a lapse in coverage

Whether it was a week or a year, the fix starts the same way: get a policy in force today.

Why insurers care about a gap

Insurers treat continuous coverage as a sign of a lower risk. A lapse, even a short one, can move you into a higher pricing tier with many companies, and some companies will not write drivers with recent gaps at all. The length of the gap matters. A few days is usually viewed very differently from several months.

The Missouri side of a lapse

Missouri law requires vehicles to be insured. Insurers report the vehicles they cover to the state, and the state can verify coverage. Driving uninsured can lead to points, fines and suspension. If your license is suspended for failing to carry insurance, the Department of Revenue requires proof of insurance on file for three years from the date you become eligible to reinstate. An SR-22 is required if an accident was involved; otherwise an insurance card is accepted. See caught driving without insurance. See how long you need an SR-22.

Getting covered again

  1. Stop driving the uninsured car until coverage is in force.
  2. Call us. We will compare companies that write drivers with a recent lapse.
  3. Choose a policy and pay the first premium. Coverage can often start the same day.
  4. Get your proof of insurance by email. No need to come in.
  5. If you received a suspension notice, tell us. We can attach an SR-22 if the state requires one.

What to expect on price

Your first policy after a lapse is likely to cost more than your old one did. The good news: the effect fades. Once you have six months to a year of continuous coverage with no new problems, more companies become competitive. Re-shop at that point.

Do not let it happen twice

Explaining the gap

When you get a quote, you'll be asked about prior insurance. Be accurate. If the gap was because you didn't own a car, were deployed, or lived somewhere you didn't need one, say so; some companies treat those situations differently from a lapse for nonpayment.

Registration and plates

In Missouri, registration and plate renewals require proof of insurance. If your registration came due during the lapse, you'll need a current policy before renewing.

Keeping it continuous from here

Continuous coverage is one of the strongest pricing factors you control. Once you're covered again, protect it: automatic payments, a card that won't expire, and a call to us before any change that could cancel the policy.

Does a lapse raise my insurance rates?

Often, yes. The effect usually fades after several months to a year of continuous coverage.

Do I need an SR-22 after a lapse?

Only if the state requires one, for example after a suspension for driving uninsured.
