SR-22 · Updated October 2026
There isn't one answer. The Missouri Department of Revenue sets the period by the reason for the suspension or revocation, and it measures from different starting points.
| Reason | Proof required for | Counted from |
|---|---|---|
| Points (speeding, stop signs, careless driving) | 2 years | Start of the suspension or revocation |
| DWI, BAC or other alcohol-related action | 2 years | Start of the suspension or revocation |
| Refusal to submit to a chemical test | 2 years | Start of the revocation |
| Unpaid accident judgment | 2 years | Start of the suspension |
| Driving without insurance (mandatory insurance) | 3 years | Date you became eligible to reinstate |
| False insurance | 3 years | Date you became eligible to reinstate |

For the two-year cases, the clock starts when the suspension or revocation began, not when you get your license back. Someone with a one-year revocation for points may have only about a year of SR-22 left after reinstatement.
For no-insurance cases, the three years start on the date you became eligible to reinstate, so the requirement can run well beyond the suspension itself.
For a mandatory insurance suspension that didn't involve an accident, the Department of Revenue accepts a copy of your insurance ID card as proof. If an accident was involved, the proof must be an SR-22. Either way, the proof must stay in place for the full three years. See SR-22 after driving without insurance.
Each action can carry its own period. You file one SR-22, but it needs to stay on file until the longest requirement is satisfied.
If your SR-22 policy cancels before your requirement ends, your insurance company notifies the state, and your privilege can be suspended again until new proof is filed. Confirm with the Department of Revenue that the requirement has ended, then talk to us about removing the filing. Often the policy continues; only the SR-22 is dropped. What happens if an SR-22 lapses.
Missouri's requirement generally stays with you until it's satisfied. Moving with an SR-22.
Two years for points, alcohol-related, refusal and judgment cases, counted from the start of the suspension. Three years for no-insurance cases, counted from the date you became eligible to reinstate.
For two-year cases, it generally starts at the beginning of the suspension or revocation. For no-insurance cases, it starts on the date you became eligible to reinstate.
If an accident was involved, yes. If not, the Department of Revenue accepts an insurance ID card, kept in place for three years.
