Renters insurance for college students

Dorm or apartment, laptop or bike: here's when a student is covered by a parent's policy and when they need their own.

Dorm residents may be covered by a parent's policy

Many homeowners policies extend some coverage to belongings of a household member who is a full-time student living in a dorm, often with a limit, such as a percentage of the parent's personal property coverage. Check the parent's policy before buying anything. If the limit is low or the deductible high, a separate renters policy may still make sense.

Off-campus apartments usually need their own policy

Once a student moves into an off-campus apartment or rental house, the parent's homeowners policy may not cover their belongings, and it typically won't provide liability coverage for the student's apartment. Many landlords near campus also require tenants to carry renters insurance with a minimum liability limit.

Roommates

Most renters policies cover the named insured and relatives living with them. Unrelated roommates usually aren't covered by each other's policies. Each roommate should have their own.

What students lose most

Accidental damage, like dropping a laptop, isn't usually covered by renters insurance. That's what device protection plans are for.

Liability matters for students too

A party guest who falls down the stairs or a kitchen fire that damages the building can lead to a claim against the student. Renters liability helps.

Bundle with the family

If the student is on the family's auto policy, adding a renters policy with the same company may earn a discount. We can check.

Springfield and Joplin students

With several colleges in Springfield and Joplin, we see a lot of student renters. See renters insurance in Springfield and renters insurance in Joplin.

Moving into the first apartment: a checklist

  1. Read the lease for any renters insurance requirement and liability minimum.
  2. Check whether a parent's policy extends to you, and how much.
  3. Make a quick list of what you own, with photos of electronics and serial numbers.
  4. Get a quote for your own policy and compare it with the parent-policy option.
  5. Send proof to the landlord before move-in.

Study abroad and summer storage

Personal property coverage often follows your belongings worldwide, but limits and conditions vary. If you store belongings in a storage unit over the summer, ask whether they're covered there and up to what amount.

Common questions

Do roommates need separate renters insurance?

Usually yes, unless they're related or named on the same policy.

Does renters insurance cover a dropped laptop?
