Living in your RV full-time: what your insurance needs

If the RV is your home, a recreational policy may leave holes where a homeowners policy used to be.

RV · Updated October 2026

Recreational versus full-time

A standard RV policy assumes the RV is used for trips and that you have a house or apartment elsewhere with its own homeowners or renters insurance. That home policy handles your personal liability and most of your belongings.

When you sell the house and move into the RV, that coverage disappears. A full-time RV policy or endorsement is designed to fill it.

What full-time coverage usually adds

Tell your insurer the truth

If you live in your RV full-time and your policy is written for recreational use, a claim may be complicated. Insurers ask how many days a year you use the RV for a reason. Be accurate.

Domicile matters

Full-time RVers often establish a legal domicile in one state. Your policy is generally written for the state where you are domiciled and where the RV is registered. If you are moving your domicile to or from Missouri, Kansas or Oklahoma, talk to us before you register.

Other coverages to review

Health and mail are separate problems

Insurance cannot solve every full-timing logistics issue, but getting the RV policy right is the foundation. Call us before you sell the house so there is no gap.

Your belongings, all of them

When you move into an RV full-time, everything you own is inside it or in a storage unit. Check that your personal property limit reflects that. Belongings in a separate storage unit may need their own coverage; ask how your policy treats off-site storage.

Working from the road

Many full-timers work remotely. Laptops, cameras and business equipment may need coverage beyond personal property limits, and business activities may require their own policy. Tell us if you work from the RV.

Long stays at one campground

Full-timers often stay at a campground for months. Some policies treat stationary use differently. Tell us about extended stays so the policy fits.

Your towed vehicle

The car or truck you tow behind a motorhome needs its own auto policy, written for your state of domicile. Coordinating both policies with the same company may earn a multi-policy discount.

Common questions

Do I need special insurance to live in my RV full-time?

Usually yes. Full-time RV coverage adds liability and personal property protection that a homeowners policy would otherwise provide.

What happens if I live in my RV on a recreational policy?

Coverage may be limited, and claims can be complicated. Tell your insurer how you use the RV.

Which state is my RV insured in?

Generally your state of domicile and registration.

Is my towed car covered by my RV policy?

Usually not. It needs its own auto policy.
