Travel trailers: what your truck's policy does and doesn't cover

Pulling a camper behind your pickup? The truck's policy covers less of it than many people assume.

RV · Updated October 2026

Liability usually follows the truck

When you tow a travel trailer or fifth wheel, liability for damage you cause on the road usually follows the tow vehicle's auto policy. The trailer is treated as an extension of the truck for liability purposes. Confirm this with your policy; terms vary.

Damage to the trailer is a different story

Your auto policy generally does not pay to repair or replace the trailer itself if it is damaged in an accident, a storm, a fire or a theft. That requires physical damage coverage on a travel trailer policy.

What a travel trailer policy can cover

Parked at the campsite

When the trailer is unhitched and parked, the truck's policy typically has nothing to do with it. If a guest trips over your awning stake and is hurt, vacation liability on the trailer policy is what responds.

Seasonal and permanent sites

If your trailer stays year-round at a campground or lake lot, tell us. Some policies treat seasonal or stationary trailers differently.

Check the hitch, too

Your truck's towing capacity, the hitch and proper weight distribution matter for safety. An overloaded combination can be harder to control, and accidents involving trailers can be serious.

Contents add up faster than people think

A stocked camper holds bedding, cookware, a grill, chairs, electronics, fishing gear and bikes. Personal effects coverage on a travel trailer policy has a limit. Add up what you actually keep in it and set the limit to match. Your homeowners policy may provide some coverage for belongings away from home, but often with lower limits and a higher deductible.

Full-time or nearly full-time?

If you spend most of the year in your travel trailer, a recreational policy may not fit. See living in your RV full-time.

What we'll ask for

Year, make, model, length and VIN; the tow vehicle; purchase price; whether you'll use it seasonally or year-round; and where it's stored.
