Renters · Updated October 2026
Many insurers discount your auto policy, your renters policy, or both, when you carry them together. Because auto premiums are usually much larger than renters premiums, even a modest percentage off the auto policy can cover a large share of the renters cost.
That's why we price it both ways: bundled with one company, and separately with whichever companies are best for each.
Bundling can also mean one company to call for both policies, one renewal date, and sometimes one payment. Small conveniences, but they help prevent lapses.
When you buy a home, the renters policy is replaced by homeowners insurance, and the bundle carries over in a new form. We can line up the timing so there's no gap. See buying a home: the insurance timeline.
Renters and auto are a common starting point. Many companies also offer multi-policy discounts when you add a motorcycle, boat or RV policy. If you own lake toys, it's worth pricing everything together. See motorcycle insurance, boat insurance and RV insurance.
When you bundle, it's a good moment to check that your liability limits make sense across both policies. If you have savings or a good income, raising renters liability to $300,000 and auto liability above state minimums usually costs less than people expect, and may qualify you for an umbrella policy later.
Call with your current auto declarations page and a rough idea of what you own. We'll quote renters alone, auto alone and the bundle, and show you the totals side by side.
Often, because a discount on the larger auto premium can offset much of the renters cost. We compare bundled and separate prices.
Bundle discounts usually require the same company. You can still buy them separately if that's cheaper overall.
Renters is replaced by homeowners, and the bundle usually continues in that form.
