Moving with an SR-22 between Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma

Joplin sits a few minutes from two state lines, so this question comes up more here than almost anywhere.

SR-22 · Updated October 2026

The rule of thumb

An SR-22 requirement belongs to the state that imposed it. If Missouri required it, Missouri expects proof until its requirement is satisfied, even if you move to Kansas or Oklahoma. If Kansas or Oklahoma required it, that state expects the proof, even if you now live in Missouri.

So two questions decide almost everything:

  1. Which state required the filing?
  2. Where do you live and keep your car now?

Moving out of the state that required it

Your new policy has to be written for the state where you now live, because that is where the car is garaged. But it also has to carry an SR-22 filing for the state that required it. Not every insurance company can do both. Some insurers only file in states where they write policies.

This is where using an agent licensed in all three states helps. We can look for a company that writes your new state and files with the old one.

Moving into Missouri with another state's requirement

Bring us the notice from the other state. We will find a Missouri policy that can carry that state's filing. You will also need to handle Missouri's own steps for getting a license and registering your vehicle here, which require proof of Missouri insurance.

Avoiding a gap during the move

The most common problem is timing. Someone moves, cancels the old policy, and starts a new one a few days later. That gap triggers a cancellation notice to the state that required the SR-22.

Different states, different coverage minimums

The three states share 25/50/25 liability minimums, but other required coverages differ. Kansas requires personal injury protection and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Missouri requires uninsured motorist coverage. Oklahoma allows uninsured motorist coverage to be rejected in writing. Your policy needs to meet the requirements of the state where it is written, and the filing needs to satisfy the state that required it.

Common questions

Does my SR-22 transfer if I move to another state?

The requirement stays with the state that imposed it. You need a policy in your new state that can carry a filing for the old one.

Can any insurance company file an out-of-state SR-22?

No. Some only file in states where they write policies. An agent licensed in both states can find one that does both.

What if I move to Missouri with a Kansas SR-22?

You need a Missouri policy that can carry the Kansas filing, plus Missouri's own license and registration steps.

How do I avoid a lapse during a move?

Start the new policy and filing the same day the old one ends, and do not cancel the old policy first.
