Why this confuses people

A Department of Revenue letter says you must file proof of insurance, and the most common proof is an SR-22. But an SR-22 is attached to an auto policy, and you don't have a car to insure. That's what a non-owner policy solves: it provides liability coverage that follows you, the driver, when you drive a car you don't own, and an insurance company can file the SR-22 on it.

Who it's for

What it covers, and what it doesn't

Covers: injuries and property damage you cause to others while driving a vehicle you don't own, up to your limits. Depending on the policy, uninsured motorist coverage may be included.

Doesn't cover: damage to the car you're driving; any car you own; or cars owned by someone in your household or available for your regular use, such as a spouse's or roommate's car. If you regularly drive a household car, being added to that car's policy is usually the right answer instead.

Why it usually costs less

There's no vehicle to insure for collision or comprehensive, so a non-owner SR-22 policy is typically less expensive than insuring a car with the same record. The reason for the SR-22 still drives the price, which is why we compare the companies that write them.

How fast

Call with your driver's license number and your Department of Revenue letter. We quote, you buy by phone, and we submit the SR-22 electronically once the policy is in force, usually the same day. Your documents are emailed to you.

When you buy a car

Call us before you drive it. We'll replace the non-owner policy with a standard policy on the car and move the SR-22 filing with no gap. A gap during your SR-22 period sends a cancellation notice to the state. What happens if an SR-22 lapses.
