Cheap SR-22 insurance in Missouri: what it costs and how to pay less
The form itself is cheap. What it represents is what moves your premium.

Two different costs
When people ask what SR-22 insurance costs, they are really asking about two things:
- The filing. Insurers usually charge a modest one-time fee to file the SR-22 certificate with the state. It is a small part of the total.
- The policy. The SR-22 has to be attached to an auto policy that meets the state's minimum requirements. The price of that policy depends mostly on why you need the SR-22.
Someone filing after a single lapse in coverage may pay much less than someone filing after a DWI with an accident. The form is the same; the risk is not.
What drives the price
- The violation itself. DWI and serious violations typically cost the most. Lapses and points-based suspensions often cost less.
- Other tickets and accidents on your record.
- Your age and driving experience.
- The vehicle you insure, and whether you carry collision and comprehensive.
- Where the car is garaged.
- Owner versus non-owner. If you do not own a vehicle, a non-owner SR-22 policy is usually less expensive than insuring a car.
- Which company you are with. This is the big one.
Why comparing companies matters more now
Not every insurer will write SR-22 policies, and those that do price high-risk drivers very differently. One company may treat a two-year-old DWI as a minor factor and another as disqualifying. That spread is why calling one company and accepting the first number is expensive. We compare the companies we work with that file SR-22s and show you the options.
Keeping the cost down
- Choose the right coverage. The state requires minimum liability and uninsured motorist coverage. If your car is paid off and older, collision and comprehensive may be optional. If it is financed, the lender requires them.
- Pay in full or set up automatic payments. Some companies discount for it, and automatic payments prevent the lapse that would restart your problems.
- Ask about a higher deductible if you need physical damage coverage.
- Do not take on new violations. A new ticket during an SR-22 period can raise the price and lengthen the trouble.
- Re-shop every renewal. As the violation ages, more companies become competitive.
What it does not cost
You will not pay us anything extra to handle the filing beyond what the insurance company charges. We file electronically with the state once the policy is in force.
Get a real number
Because the price depends so much on the violation and the company, any average you read online is close to useless for you. Call us with your notice in hand and we can quote real options, usually in one call.
Common questions
How much is an SR-22 filing fee?
Insurers usually charge a modest one-time fee. The larger cost is the policy, which is priced on your record.
Why is SR-22 insurance expensive?
Because the violation that required the SR-22, such as a DWI or driving uninsured, raises the insurer's view of your risk.
Is non-owner SR-22 insurance cheaper?
Usually, because there is no vehicle to insure for physical damage.
Will my SR-22 insurance get cheaper over time?
Often, as the violation ages and if you keep a clean record. Re-shop at each renewal.
The short version- The filing fee is small; the violation drives the premium.
- Companies price SR-22 drivers very differently.
- Non-owner SR-22 policies usually cost less.
- Automatic payments and a clean record bring the price down over time.
