Sport bikes cost more to insure than most other motorcycles. Here's why, and how to keep the price reasonable.
Insurers price sport bikes, especially supersport models, higher than cruisers or touring bikes of similar value. High performance, younger riders, more frequent claims and higher theft rates all play a part. The difference is biggest for riders under 25.
Sport bikes are frequent theft targets. Garage storage, a disc lock, a cover and a GPS tracker reduce risk, and some companies discount for anti-theft devices. Keep comprehensive coverage year-round.
Most motorcycle policies exclude racing and track use. If you do track days, ask whether any coverage applies, and consider specialized track-day coverage for that use.
Sport bike crashes can be serious. Carry uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage at the same limits as liability, and consider medical payments coverage. If you've modified the bike, see custom parts and gear.
